Tap water may need suitable treatment before being introduced because public supplies can contain chlorine or chloramine. Replacement water should also be introduced at an appropriate temperature to avoid sudden environmental changes.
Filter maintenance requires a balanced approach. Excessive debris needs to be removed, but biological media contains beneficial bacteria and should not be unnecessarily sterilised. The same principle applies to general cleaning. A healthy aquarium does not need to be completely dismantled and scrubbed regularly. Partial water changes, appropriate substrate cleaning, algae management and routine equipment inspection are usually much more suitable.
Observing fish provides valuable information about the condition of the aquarium. Healthy fish generally establish recognisable feeding, swimming and social behaviours. Sudden changes can provide an early indication of environmental or health problems.
If several fish begin behaving unusually at the same time, checking temperature and water parameters is a sensible first step. Problems involving ammonia, nitrite or other environmental conditions can sometimes produce symptoms that appear similar to disease.
New fish can potentially introduce parasites or infections, so experienced fishkeepers may use a separate quarantine tank before adding new livestock to an established aquarium. This becomes particularly valuable as the size and value of an existing collection increases.
Equipment should also be checked periodically. Filters can become restricted, heaters can eventually fail and lighting performance may change. Identifying these issues during routine maintenance is much easier than dealing with a sudden equipment failure.
Over time, a well-managed aquarium becomes increasingly established. Plants develop, beneficial bacteria mature and fish settle into predictable behaviour. At this point, consistency generally becomes more important than continually adjusting the environment.
